Preventative Measures for Propane Safety
Schedule Regular Maintenance
Whether you lease or own your propane tank, having maintenance (tank monitoring, cathodic protection, safety inspection, annual tune-up) performed regularly is critical to your home and family’s safety. If your tank is owned by Airgas, we’ll make sure to schedule this service for you. If you own your own tank, please remember to schedule this with us annually for your protection.
Understand Your Tank
It is important to familiarize yourself with the general operative functions of your propane tank. Be sure to know how to turn your tank off and how to properly read your tank gauge. Understanding and monitoring your tank gauge prevents the risk of running out of gas, which can cause serious safety hazards including fires and explosions. Make sure your tank is full at all times.
Educate Your Family
Propane safety measures should be understood by all members of the household. Establishing set plans for emergency evacuation is crucial to keep everyone safe. Check out family propane safety materials to create a plan to follow should a leak occur.
Practice Propane Safety On the Road
Many Airgas customers use propane to fuel other aspects of life beyond home or commercial heating. Whether you are refilling your propane-fired grill tank or moving supplies from one construction site to the other, it is crucial to employ these tactics to transport and handle small cylinders safely.

Important Information about Gas Leaks
Can you smell propane in your home?
-
- Immediately put out any smoking materials or open flames.
- Do not touch or turn on any light switches or appliances, as this can cause a spark. This includes cellphones!
- Inform other inhabitants and leave the building immediately.
- Turn off your main gas supply if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
- Away from your property, report a leak by calling 911 or contacting us at (800) 949-5157 or (410) 565-6427 right away.
- ONLY return to the area if a Airgas certified employee, emergency responder, or service technician deems it safe.
Do you suspect carbon monoxide (CO) is present in your home?
Although extremely rare, CO can be released by appliances that are not operating correctly or from a blocked venting system or chimney. This makes annual system maintenance crucial. If you suspect CO may be present in your home, turn off any appliances that may be emitting the gas, allow fresh air into your home, and call your local fire department.
